A serving police officer has appeared in court charged with raping a 17-year-old girl just months after he was hailed a hero for saving a baby’s life.

Pc Declan Gabriel, 27, is accused of raping the teenager and carrying out two other sexual assaults on a female on September 21 last year.

The Northamptonshire Police officer is also charged with misconduct in a public office on the same date.

He appeared in the dock at Kettering Magistrates Court yesterday wearing a blue and white striped shirt, blue trousers and a silver tie.

The local response officer spoke only to confirm his name and showed no emotion during the five-minute hearing.

JPs released him on bail until May 4 when he will appear before a judge at Northampton Crown Court.

Gabriel, whose address cannot be published for legal reasons, was bailed on the condition he remain at his current residence and has no contact with the alleged victims.

He was charged in February this year just a few months after he posted on Twitter about saving a baby girl’s life.

He told how he rushed to the child’s aid after hearing her mother screaming while investigating a burglary in Northamptonshire.

Speaking at the time, the officer said: ‘My role is to save life and limb, with crime fighting a separate bit. It is what I signed up for.’

Deputy Chief Constable of Northamptonshire Police, Andy Frost, said, ‘Any internal decision regarding possible misconduct will take place only upon completion of court proceedings and because they are now active it would be inappropriate for us to make any further comment at this stage.’

‘The officer has remained suspended from duty for the duration of the investigation and will remain so until the conclusion of court proceedings.
